Comedy of Errors
Although no great expectations were pinned on the General Elections 2024, the aftermath of the so-called free and fair polls is now ending up as a full-blown farce, a bad omen for the sought-after political stability and economic revival of the country. Amidst a barrage of pre and after-poll rigging allegations, the country is sinking into further political instability, which will soon ratchet up into civil anarchy and law and order crisis across the country if the ongoing disaster is not controlled peacefully through political and constitutional means. Be that as it may, the present chaotic state of affairs alludes to the grim reality that the script of the unelected powers that be has gone totally wrong. At the same time, any new machination to political skullduggery would bring in more chaos, making the situation from bad to worse. In a word, sanity needs to prevail in the corridors of power, and the political process should not be derailed rain or shine.
No Respite to Inflation
Election or no election, there is no respite to hyperinflation for the poor citizens. To make matters worse, the ongoing inflation crisis looks hell-bent on breaking its previous records. Especially when the month of Holy Ramzan is just around the corner, soaring food prices have doubled, while the steep cost of the rest of the essential items, along with inflated energy bills, is turning the hyperinflation spree into a nightmare with no end in sight. Will there be a full stop to the current inflation crisis? Is anybody listening?
Cricket for Catharsis
Having kicked off its ninth iteration, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is in full swing. It is indeed a moment of joy and celebration for the people of Pakistan and the millions of cricket lovers across the globe. This time, the holding of the 9th edition of the PSL stands out from its earlier editions as the annual cricket carnival is now taking place when the host nation is in a deep political crisis. One hopes this month-long cricket festivity will bring immense joy to the country’s people and serve as a much-needed distraction from the ongoing political mess and socio-economic mayhem plaguing the nation.
