Education
Chirp of Chalk
There are many reasons why online programs have become a popular form of distance learning in higher education today.

Education is a basic pillar of every strong nation.Technology has helped human kind at a time of dire need. Online education has proved to be a life saver for the world in the global pandemic. It’s been almost two years that students at every level have forgotten the chirp of chalk on the blackboard. In 186 countries around the world, 1.2 billion children are affected by the pandemic. It’s not only the disease which is making health fragile but online schooling has also become a threat.
There are two diagonal approaches regarding on-line education with lots of surveys and neo-liberal ideologies. There is no harm if we say that the on-line mode of education using several softwares has saved the world from another pandemic, i.e. “Illiteracy”. Pragmatically speaking, the virtual mode of education and work has saved time and resources for the individual. It has created ample opportunities for the masses, some of whom have high expertise in digital marketing and visual and graphic aids. Furthermore, people have become more inclined towards using multiple gadgets. The situation perhaps rightly fits the old adage, “Necessity is the mother of invention.”
On the other side, with the rise of e-learning, the quality of education plus notions of students have been jeopardized. Students aiming for technical qualifications and various disciplines of engineering are most affected. Numerous problems have emerged following adoption of virtual sessions. Flexibility of student during a lecture is a major problem. Researchers have observed that 80 percent of the students get bored and disengaged during a lecture and this leads to unproductivity. Another important and recurring issue is the debugging of errors in connectivity. Login problems, downloading errors, weak internet connections, audio/video problems and other technical issues create disinterest among students.
Mental health issues have also been observed in the past two years. Many students and teachers face serious psychological problems due to a lack of focus and concentration, stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia are rampant. Around the globe, most psychiatrists and psychologists taking online counselling sessions have keenly observed that 70 percent of the students require cognitive therapy to get rid of negative thoughts while 30 percent need serious medical attention due to the ancestral mental illness issue. As a remedy, Howard Aldrich, Professor at UNC Chapel Hill, says, “Remember to be flexible and empathetic during the COVID as students need lots of support to navigate financial, health and safety concerns.”
There are pros and cons of every situation or crisis. Two principles govern virtual learning. One says virtual learning should be adopted and made compulsory as it brings novelty and creativity in technology. It can create ease for the people who are somewhat introverted. The other talks about those who cannot manage work and studies together. E-learning is considered the best option for them. It is also thought that e-learning can create mental health issues; research is still at a nascent stage about the relavant psychological issues.
There are ample solutions to cope with mental health. It us important to create a designated and motivating workspace which should have enough bright light with proper sitting arrangement. Secondly, a proper diet and meal makes a huge difference. Additionally, proper sleeping and healthy habits are always a preamble for having a healthy lifestyle. Exercise and other physical activities can positively affect your personality and make you more active and responsive towards your studies. Set up a positive tone in your home. Encourage healthy discussion and have a ready attitude towards accepting challenges.
It is said that there is always ease after a crisis. Resilience is a predominant feature of the human being. As humans take to e-learning as a vital solution for continuing education, they will definitely find a solution to cope with mental illness during virtual learning. As a technologist and a scholar, I believe education through any means is a powerful tool which enables your cells to build a strong and developed personality, no matter what the situation. ![]()
