From day one, Byco has been committed to reducing the impact of its operations on the environment while protecting local habitats. The Company conducts frequent surveys to keep a close check on the condition of the sub-sea pipeline to ensure that the balance of the marine life is not disturbed. The underwater pipeline has now become a home to many diverse species of marine life. The solid structure has provided a perfect environment for the development of artificial coral reefs, which has attracted several species of fish that feed on the corals, developing a self-sustaining microclimate. Coral reefs support the highest known biodiversity of marine life and constitute the largest biologically generated structures on Earth. Similarly, the artificial coral reef on Byco’s sub-sea pipeline helps maintain a healthy ecosystem and adds to the marine biodiversity to a large extent.

Coral reefs tend to grow on stable and flat structures. Naturally, the reefs are made of rock, sand, coral, and other materials, while artificial reefs can develop on most metal structures. According to marine biologists, artificial coral reefs help preserve the marine biodiversity of the region. Recently, the Company’s dedicated OSR team surveyed the condition of the pipeline and found the artificial coral reefs in a healthy condition. Many diverse species had made the structure their home. Due to its unique location, the structure offers shelter to marine life from predators and is a constant source of sustenance.

When it comes to sustainability, environmental innovation, and compliance, Byco Petroleum excels at all its environmental functions and health, safety, and social responsibility indicators. The Company has always prioritized environmental wellbeing over its operations and has placed well-thought safety policies to protect the environment from any kind of degradation and pollution hazards. Giving high regard to environmental protection and conservation, Byco, for example, has planted several thousand trees in Karachi and near its oil refining facility in Hub, Balochistan, in order to preserve the environment from human-caused afflictions as well as to reduce the impact of global warming, which is already causing crippling damage around the world.

Most importantly, Byco’s tree plantation method is one of its kind, based on the Miyawaki Method, developed by Dr. Akira Miyawaki, a world-known botanist from Japan. Making the most of Miyawaki’s Potential Natural Vegetation theory, Byco has been at the forefront of tree planting and climate change efforts, directed toward promoting the replication of natural forests to combat climate change and global warming.

Byco’s concern for the environment is not limited to land only but also extends to marine life activism and the protection of inland water bodies. Carrying out its oil operations in the sea, the Company follows its well-defined policies to ensure the protection and conservation of the marine life.

At Byco Petroleum, environmental restoration and protection is one of its mainstream business principles and is thus a central part of its operations. The Company is well cognizant of its responsibilities towards the social and environmental wellbeing of the area it operates in. In this respect, Byco uses its several dedicated resources to monitor and maintain its operations at sea, with the primary objective to ensure the protection of the surrounding area. The SPM is anchored near Charna Island, which is home to beautiful coral reefs and diverse marine creatures. Recently, some biological researchers raised concern over the degradation of marine life due to recreational activities in the area, since then the government has limited access to tourists in the region. In light of that, the Company has also restricted access to local fishermen in its territories to protect the artificial coral reefs.
