The Wayward Screen
Studies show a clear connection between social media addiction and deviant behavior among young users, highlighting the importance of awareness and responsible use.

The improper use of social media has become a major concern in the modern world. In developing countries in particular, where a significant portion of the population is illiterate, a lack of awareness and experience further exacerbates the issue. This deficiency undermines the development of civic responsibility. As a result, irresponsible use of social media has disrupted many households, put many people’s futures at risk, and prompted numerous students to give up on their education.
It is important to note that social media itself is not inherently harmful; rather, its excessive and improper use poses serious challenges. The younger generation, particularly Generation Z, often imitates the exaggerated emotional behaviours portrayed in online content. As a result, uncivilized actions are increasingly perceived as acceptable or even desirable, reflecting a deeply concerning social trend.
To address these issues, existing frameworks such as the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) and its amended provisions must be effectively implemented, while proposed mechanisms such as the Digital Rights Protection Authority (DRPA) need to be expedited and operationalised. Merely establishing laws is insufficient without proper enforcement. Law enforcement agencies must adopt a proactive and accountable approach.
We all need to work together to help guide the new generation in the right direction in the online world.
Furthermore, any misuse of legal authority by officials should be met with strict and impartial consequences. Legal action must be taken against all forms of content — videos, images, or written material — that promote misinformation, violate individual rights, defame others, or contribute to social disruption.
Many crimes occur due to the misuse of social media. As a result, progress is hindered, people become increasingly prone to laziness, and students waste valuable time on unproductive activities. A collective effort is required to prevent the new generation from going down the wrong path. To achieve this, law enforcement agencies, social organizations, public representatives, educators, parents, and celebrities must all play their roles. Their coordinated efforts are essential to guide the younger generation towards constructive and responsible behaviour.
Numerous research studies show a clear connection between social media addiction and deviant behavior among young users. Moreover, the absence of healthy physical and intellectual activities further compounds the problem. Both urban and rural areas suffer from a lack of adequate recreational facilities, such as playgrounds, which are vital for children’s healthy development. Under such circumstances, it is unrealistic to expect young individuals to engage in positive activities when they are constantly exposed to distractions.
It is imperative to take timely and constructive steps to support the new generation through meaningful physical and mental activities by adopting all possible measures.
