The Nun 2
Fight the Devil
A sequel to The Nun Part 1, The Nun 2 is a Warner Brothers production directed by Michael Chaves. With the script written by Akela Cooper, the film has phenomenal visual effects, costumes, and music composition. With a 1 hour and 50 minutes runtime, it has been rated at 5.9/10 on IMDB. It falls into the genres of horror, mystery, and thriller.
Though an average rating, the film still holds the audience captive through the entire length of the film. The plot is convoluted. It is set in a nunnery/convent possessed by a demon. Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), Sophie (Katelyn ROSE Downey), Kate (Anna Popplewell), St. Lucy (Kate Colbrooke), Maurice (Jonas Bloquet), and Sister Deborah (Storm Reid) are at the centre of the story. The setting is 1956, France, where Sister Irene once again faces Valak (Bonnie Aarons), the demon nun. As a couple of priests and a nun get murdered, Sister Irene is tasked to investigate the matter by Father Birke. After an ancient relic, the demon is a pair of eyes, and the only way to defeat the demon is to find the relic and hold it in its face till the spirit is burnt out.
The head, Nun, claims Sister Deborah ‘is in trouble and didn’t have anything to confess.’ She jokes with Sister Irene, saying: ‘Maybe I’ll have something to confess,’ with a wink in her eye.
‘Your mother sent you here,’ she says to Sister Irene, who agrees with sadness as she loved her mother a lot who’s sent to an asylum.
Enter Sophie and Race /Maurice. Sophie is Kate’s (a teacher at the nunnery) daughter and is attracted to Maurice. Here, Sister Irene makes an appearance. The scene shifts to the murder of a 90-year-old nun and a priest with his throat slit. They are buried inside the church. Sister Irene reluctantly accepts the challenge to investigate the murder. Her mother died in a fire, and she believes in the power of miracles. The thematic concern of the film is ‘to fight the devil.’
‘The devil will appear in the form of a monstrous goat. Whatever you do and hear, don’t look away. He’s reckoning you.’
As Irene tries to kill the demon, she dies only to be reborn after the doctor treats her. She has a vision where she sees what the demon wants. It wants a coveted prize and an ancient relic. As Sister Deborah and Sister Irene try to piece together the puzzle, the scene shifts to the Catholic archives in France. God protects all in the boarding school against the demon that resides within the convent. Who is the demon? Whom does it live in? How to stop it? These are all questions that lurk in the mind of the viewer.
As Sophie, Sister Irene, and Sister Deborah, with a few schoolgirls, fight against the demon, they pray: ‘In the name of God, leave this man.’
Maurice tries to win over Sophie, saying, ‘Don’t be afraid of me; I am your friend. I would never hurt you.’ Sister Irene holds the relic in Race’s face, killing the demon and freeing him from the exorcism. The film ends on a note of hope. Is Maurice finally freed?
To sum up, The Nun 2 is a film to watch. Its spookiness reminds me of Agatha Christie and Harry Potter! Full of suspense and thrill, the film wins the viewers’ hearts. It ends on a positive note.
