Enduring Relevance
The recent 4-day war between Pakistan and India should not be misread as a passing event but a firm reminder that Pakistan’s defense is uncompromising. Here's my article in the July issue of SouthAsia magazine which highlights that Pakistan’s relevance in South Asia is not contingent upon India’s acknowledgment.

In the turbulent landscape of South Asia, peace remains a fragile ideal, often undermined by hegemonic ambitions, historical grievances, and unresolved disputes. At the heart of this regional unease lies the decades-old issue of Jammu and Kashmir, a matter that revisionist narratives or unilateral actions cannot brush aside. Despite India’s persistent attempts to project Pakistan as irrelevant to its strategic calculus, recent events, particularly the armed engagement in May, serve as a stark reminder of Pakistan’s enduring relevance and resolute capacity to defend its sovereignty.
For too long, India has attempted to construct a narrative in which it occupies a self-assumed moral and strategic high ground. By portraying Pakistan as a peripheral actor and minimizing the significance of the Kashmir dispute, India seeks to consolidate its regional dominance without addressing the foundational issues that continue to haunt South Asia. This approach is neither sustainable nor grounded in reality. Any vision of lasting peace or regional integration must begin by acknowledging Pakistan’s centrality in the regional matrix and recognizing its legitimate concerns.
Strategic Miscalculations in New Delhi
India’s approach in recent years—marked by diplomatic isolation attempts, cross-border incursions, and a consistent vilification campaign—reflects a troubling departure from the principles of peaceful coexistence. The notion that India can sideline Pakistan while forcibly suppressing the Kashmiri struggle for self-determination is not only flawed but fundamentally dangerous. Such miscalculations have repeatedly led to escalations, the most recent being the four-day war in May, which once again demonstrated Pakistan’s preparedness and its unyielding commitment to safeguarding its territorial integrity.
The planners in New Delhi must understand that bellicose posturing and coercive tactics have never succeeded in undermining Pakistan’s resolve. These provocations have only reinforced Pakistan’s strategic focus and national unity. The May confrontation did not arise in a vacuum—it was a response to a pattern of aggressive actions aimed at testing Pakistan’s restraint. The response was measured, proportionate, and effective—an unmistakable message that Pakistan neither seeks conflict, nor will it shy away from defending itself with full force if pushed.
Kashmir: The Unresolved Core
No meaningful dialogue or regional stability can be achieved without addressing the Jammu and Kashmir issue, a dispute recognized internationally and grounded in numerous UN Security Council resolutions. India’s unilateral revocation of Article 370 in August 2019, aimed at altering the demographic and political fabric of the disputed territory, was not just an internal matter, as New Delhi insists. It was a direct affront to international law, bilateral agreements, and the rights of the Kashmiri people.
Pakistan has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute as per the aspirations of the Kashmiri people and international legal frameworks. Contrary to India’s narrative, Pakistan’s stance has always been rooted in diplomacy, legality, and humanitarian concern. India’s insistence on framing any mention of Kashmir as interference in its internal affairs reveals an unwillingness to confront the reality on the ground—a reality marked by repression, curfews, and denial of fundamental rights.

Diplomatic Front: Pakistan’s Poise Amid Provocations
Pakistan has demonstrated diplomatic maturity despite facing an aggressive neighbor that frequently resorts to disinformation and coercion. Its engagement with the international community remains principled, calling for restraint, dialogue, and mutual respect. Where India has often chosen the path of deflection and confrontation in multilateral forums, Pakistan has focused on consensus-building and adherence to international norms.
The recent escalation between Pakistan and India should serve as a wake-up call for Indian policymakers. The assumption that Pakistan can be provoked without consequence, or that its regional voice can be drowned out through international lobbying, is divorced from geopolitical realities. Pakistan remains a key stakeholder in South Asian stability, a nuclear power with a capable military, and a nation that enjoys deep-rooted ties with the Muslim world, China, and other global players. Any attempt to marginalize Pakistan—militarily or diplomatically—is bound to fail.
Pakistan’s relevance in South Asia is not contingent upon India’s acknowledgment.
Strategic Patience, Not Submission
It is essential to distinguish between strategic patience and strategic weakness. Pakistan’s approach has been guided by responsibility and caution, not by fear or inability. The restraint shown in the face of repeated provocations is a testament to Pakistan’s commitment to peace, not an indication that aggression will go unanswered. Should India miscalculate Pakistan’s silence as acquiescence, it would do so at its peril.
In an increasingly interconnected world, where economic corridors, regional cooperation, and shared security threats demand collaboration, India’s unwillingness to engage meaningfully with Pakistan is counterproductive and short-sighted. A stable South Asia cannot be built on unilateralism or historical denialism. Pakistan’s role—as a bridge between Central and South Asia, a key player in the Belt and Road Initiative, and a nuclear power committed to responsible deterrence—cannot be ignored.
A Call for Introspection, Not Escalation
It is time for Indian policymakers to reconsider their confrontational posture. Peace is not achieved through supremacy but through engagement. Stability is not preserved by isolation but by dialogue. Pakistan remains open to resolving all outstanding disputes peacefully, provided there is sincerity and a willingness to approach these issues on equal footing.
The recent conflict should not be misread as a passing event. It is a signal—a clear and firm reminder that Pakistan’s defense is uncompromising, its strategic vision clear, and its place in the region secure. India must abandon the illusion that it can dictate terms while avoiding responsibility for the regional instability it helps perpetuate.
Pakistan’s relevance in South Asia is not contingent upon India’s acknowledgment. It is derived from its geography, its people, its resilience, and its unwavering commitment to national dignity. Any hostile action aimed at undermining Pakistan—be it military, diplomatic, or subversive—will be met with a response that is both proportionate and resolute.
The choice before India is clear: continue down the path of aggression and perpetual hostility, or recognize the value of coexistence and mutual respect. Either way, Pakistan will remain vigilant, prepared, and deeply committed to defending its sovereignty and promoting peace, not as a sign of weakness, but as a reflection of strength rooted in responsibility. ![]()
