Devastating Consequences
In a society where raising a girl child is seen as a burden, teen marriages are held to ward off an increasing socioeconomic pressure and financial burden.

Marriage is regarded as the most significant institution established in the human history. The sanctity of the marital institution brings happiness, since it leads to the union of two individuals in a sacred bond. However, if the marrying couple is between 13 and 19 year, the marriage is referred to as 'teen marriage', which has become a matter of concern, particularly in poor countries. The period of adolescence is considered as the most crucial and critical age.
Therefore, the teen marriage, either willingly or by compulsion, gives rise to several psychological, social and economic evils, such as social insecurity, teenage pregnancy, economic backwardness, and the rest.
In a society where raising a girl child is seen as a burden, teen marriages are mostly held to ward off an increasing socioeconomic pressure and financial burden. Although there are a number of reasons why teen marriages take place, the problems and implications faced by the adolescents due to their early marriages cannot be ignored. The most common issues are early-age pregnancy complications, social isolation, educational hindrances and socioeconomic backwardness, which, in the end, reinforces gender inequality and leads to a widening gender gap in terms of education, skills, health and survival.
Research studies reveal the fact that teenage couples are more likely to be less educated and have a lower income level. Teen marriages result in the denial of opportunities for both individuals, however, these are mostly girls who bear the brunt of teen marriages in the form of low education and life skills, while enhancing their vulnerability to vital health and social concerns. Among the teen mothers, therefore, the rate of unintended pregnancy, abortion, preterm labour and maternal mortality is alarmingly high. A teenage couple suffers from various psychological issues too, for instance, depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety.
Early marriages are, therefore, seen as a root cause for many other problems in the society and adolescents, especially girls, are considered to be the most vulnerable victims. Thus, there is a dire need to address the issue of teen marriages and we pay attention to end this practice, which, by and large, affects the socioeconomic development of the society as well. ![]()
