Expanding Gulf

Perhaps Jehangir Tareen, the PTI stalwart, has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. He was known as Imran Khan’s ATM once. Then what happened? A gulf has developed between the two and now since legalities have taken over in the incontrollable sugar scandal, there is not much room to trek back. A mere grain of sweetness has turned everything upside down.

 

Changing Perception

The perception about the dhol (drum), a traditional musical instrument in Pakistan and indeed in South Asia, has always been that only men perform on it. That perception is changing and women, especially educated Pakistanis, are taking to dhol-playing with zeal. The best known is Arishma Maryam. She is also a singer but now she is serious about the dhol. The other well-known female dhol player is Horeya Asmat.

 

Symbol in Death

George Floyd has become a symbol of white oppression on blacks in today’s America. When the jury turned in a guilty verdict against Derek Chauvin, the white cop who is said to have killed Floyd in Minneapolis by choking him, most Americans thought the ends of justice had been met, including President Joe Biden. Does this open a new chapter in the U.S. justice system?

 

She Keeps Going

It was really remarkable that Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip stayed married for 73 years and were only separated when Prince Philip died in April at the age of 99. The Queen marked her 95th birthday on April 21 and became the longest-serving monarch (even longer than Queen Victoria) in British history. At her ripe age, the Queen keeps going despite the many challenges that the British royal family has faced for some time.
