Mamdani Matters
The majority of Muslims, not only in Pakistan but also around the world, are happy to know about the spectacular rise of Zohran Mamdani in the American political scene. This is, indeed, not a small development in the U.S., as someone who boldly introduces himself as a “Muslim Socialist” has officially been declared as the Democratic Party’s nominee for the position of mayor of New York. The mayoral elections in New York City are due in November 2025, and the city has generally preferred to elect its mayors nominated by the Democratic Party. In the broader context, Zohran has already won the “war of narratives” before being elected. His nomination by the Democratic Party also sends a message that the party is gradually regaining the political ground lost at the hands of U.S. President Donald Trump. Zohran Mamdani grew up in a city that is the center of the capitalist system and plays a key role in determining the world’s economic destiny. Despite being the ultimate symbol of the capitalist system, people from all over the world, fed up with oppressive governments or deprived of employment opportunities, arrive in droves in the city to settle here permanently. Mamdani’s father came to America from Uganda, and his ancestral roots are in Gujarat, India. Zohran also calls himself a Muslim because of his father and is not at all ashamed of this identity. Muslims make up only 3% of New York’s population. But Zohran has never worried about it because ideologically, he calls himself a “socialist” who dreams of solidarity with the poor, transcending divisions based on religion, color, and race. A 33-year-old young man with immense energy, his mayoral campaign is based on the premise of why the poor residents, who have made New York “the city that never sleeps” with their hard work and hardship, sleep under the open sky and do not even have money for two meals a day?

Zohran Mamdani has emerged suddenly and rapidly. Even Donald Trump is among those trying to figure out his meteoric ascent despite his Islamic credentials. Mamdani’s opponents know that he is a strong candidate for New York’s mayoral election and that he speaks out for the freedom of Palestine, even though the Democratic Party is generally considered pro-Israel. The likes of Donald Trump also know that Zohran blames the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, for the Gujarat massacre. In an interview, mayoral candidates were asked if they would help the Indian Prime Minister hold a rally in New York. All refused, but Zohran Mamdani insisted that if elected mayor of New York, he would never want to meet Modi. Despite frequently expressing such insidious ideas out in the open, Zohran won the nomination for the mayoral election of the Democratic Party after an open but tough competition. His victory sends a message that if a person stands firm in the political arena with sincerity and true intentions for the welfare of people, then the monopolists, racists, and bigoted groups cannot harm him.
In Mamdani’s own words, “Hope is not naive when you have a vision and a movement behind it. Hope is, in fact, righteous. This is the dawn of a new era in New York City. And we will win it together.” The world needs not one but thousands of Zohran Mamdanis. A new face of New York City, Mamdani symbolizes a firm belief in change through democratic means. He has a vision, and his miraculous rise heralds the onset of a new era not only for the electorate of the world’s financial capital but also for Muslim immigrants searching for identity with dignity on foreign shores.
