Well Played, Malik Riaz
The accountability court, which heard the £190 million Al Qadir University Trust case since February 2023, has now sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife to 14 and seven years for corruption. However, most of the media avoided naming Malik Riaz, the principal beneficiary of the mega corruption case, as the terms ‘Property Tycoon’ and ‘Business Tycoon’ were used to refer to Mr. Riaz. One might ask if the act of charm or something similar prevented Pakistan’s independent media, especially the electronic one, from naming Malik Riaz, who seems to have a more significant influence and power over how information is presented and perceived by Pakistani media. Well played, Malik Riaz!
Stand Up for the Champions
At long last, Pakistan is hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 this month. Alongside the defending champion Pakistan, the eight-team event is all set to feature Bangladesh, Afghanistan, England, Australia, India, South Africa, and New Zealand. No matter the result, Pakistan can be referred to as the ultimate winner since this is not a means feat for a cricket-deprived country like Pakistan to hold the mega event despite both overt and covert attempts made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take the hosting rights from Pakistan. Most of all, the main credit goes to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which has been able to defy all odds in spite of the BCCI’s reluctance to send its team to Pakistan. In short, it’s time to stand up for the champions.
UnSafe Ali Khan
Indian film star Saif Ali Khan was stabbed six times in the wee hours of January 16 after a burglar broke into his lavish residence in Mumbai. Actor Saif Ali Khan, also the sole nawab who inherited a huge property from his grandmother Sajida Sultan, the daughter of Bhopal’s last Nawab, is now back home after a successful recovery. Relegating his status from Saif Ali Khan to UnSafe Ali Khan, the incident has also raised many questions about the safety of the most revered celebrities in India. Given that another film star, Salman Khan, has already been targeted in the past by Indian gangsters in broad daylight, Nawab Saif Ali Khan needs to be more cautious than ever before.
