Interview
‘We surpassed our top-line targets with a steady growth.’
An exclusive interview with Syed Atik Ali,
Chief Operating Officer, M&P Express Logistics.
Please brief us about yourself.
I am a Chartered Accountant by profession. With post-qualification experience spanning over 24 years, have worked in diversified industry verticals including banking, information technology, food, distribution and logistics.
How has been your experience as the COO of the M&P Express Logistics? Any major accomplishment?
I joined this venture in 2017 as its CFO, two years after the acquisition of OCS by Muller & Phipps Pakistan. Since the company was facing a financial crisis back then, my top priority was to bail the company out of the financial crunch and remove those overheads adding to the financial losses.
It was certainly an uphill task as people both within and outside the organization were skeptical about the survival of the company. As a recourse measure, we let off our critical airline haul (a chartered aircraft), shut down unprofitable and passive business units and rightsized the workforce to some extent. These measures helped us put the company on a growth trajectory in late 2018 and 2019, enabling us to expand our infrastructure and reach across the country.
I became the Chief Operating Officer in 2020 and at that point the Covid-19 pandemic was at its peak. To overcome its associated challenges posing threats to our business sustainability, we formulated a contingent plan with two major objectives: Mitigate risks to our people’s safety particularly of our frontline staff and ensure the ceaseless movement of essential goods that mainly included pharmaceuticals and Covid-19 related shipments. Running our business operations as usual even during the prolonged lockdowns, we surpassed our top-line targets with a steady growth, which is continuing into 2022.
What is your core business philosophy?
I follow business philosophy as recommended by Jim Collins and Bill Lazier in their book titled “BE 2.0 (Beyond Entrepreneurship 2.0).” .” It says,
a) You need right people far more than you need the right business ideas, especially since any specific business idea is likely to fail anyway;
b) If you define success by money, you always lose. The real scorecard in life is how well you build meaningful relationships and how well you live to your core values. This means that values come before goals, before strategy, before tactics, before products, before market choices, before financing, before business plans and before every decision.
What storage, packaging and assembly options do you offer?
At M&P Courier, we understand our customers’ needs better and help them manage their core businesses more efficiently through our logistics and supply chain solutions.
M&P offers courier (domestic and international), logistics and COD services to both B2B and B2C clients. We also offer customized solutions to corporate clients, such as temperature-controlled solution, print and distribution.
M&P Courier also offers service add-ons like Home Pickup, MOFA along with branded packaging solutions such as My Box (offering both box and briefcase style packaging), My Flyer, etc.
What operational bottlenecks do you anticipate?
Technology is playing a vital role in shaping the industry which is growing at a rapid pace. Thus adaptibility is the key and M&P is adapting, growing and innovating every day.
In terms of operational challenges, rising fuel prices, along with inflation and increasing exchange rate of dollar against national currency, have a massive impact on our business.
How do you see the company improving in the coming years?
The dynamics of the logistics industry are undergoing radical transformation, e-commerce revolution, and technological advancement. We are reshaping our business and adopting latest technologies to make the most of emerging trends.
Our network of 127 branches with 750+ Courier Centers are providing services in over 1600+ locations across Pakistan. We are continuously investing in our commercial capabilities to support our customers and expanding our physical and digital reach.
What professional associations and accreditations does M&P hold?
The journey of Muller and Phipps started in 1912 by developing a small yet strong distribution network that has outgrown to one of the leading distribution companies of Pakistan.
Thanks to the solid association with The Getz Group spread across 150+ locations, 18000+ resources and 52 countries throughout the Asia Pacific region, we have been able to capitalize on the vast knowledge and expertise that comes with its association to further enhance the competitiveness of our services.
Muller and Phipps Pakistan acquired OCS Pakistan in 2015 and has been in close coordination with many renowned international shippers and logistical distribution. ![]()
