It is the pioneering spirit of excellence backed by continued dedication and an abiding spirit to stay at the top that gives a Company a distinct place in any business environment. This was the inspiration that was behind the setting up of Zulfeqar Industries Limited. (ZIL) and its forward march through decades. The spirit has continued to work productively and keeps ZIL Limited operating as a very successful business enterprise despite tough competition from both national and multinational players.
In fact, the name of ZIL is iconic in Pakistan’s manufacturing and marketing industry. Its value system was created by its founding fathers, the late Syed Maratib Ali who was the founder and served as chairman from1954 to 1961. The other was the late Syed Wajid Ali, who was the company’s managing director.
ZIL Limited was founded in 1954, in Hyderabad (Sindh) by Syed Maratib Ali, who is said to have invested a fortune in establishing the company. Before ZIL came on the scene, Syed Maratib Ali was in real estate and agribusiness. He subsequently decided to bring quality consumer goods to the people of Pakistan and Zulfeqar Industries was born. His vision has been ably carried forward under Syed Wajid Ali, Syed Asad Ali and now Mrs. Feriel Ali-Mehdi.
Their sustained endeavours have made ZIL a leading name in Pakistan’s industrial landscape.
The formative years, challenging as they were due to scarcity of infrastructure required for transportation of products from factory to markets across the network, proved to be stepping stones that led to growth of enabling households across Pakistan to enjoy high quality products and benefit from ZIL’s expertise in personal wash. It is this focus on providing customers the best that ZIL’s portfolio grew from personal wash offerings of soaps to include hand-wash as well as laundry soap.
In 2010, the Chairperson of ZIL Limited, Mrs. Feriel Ali-Mehdi, led the Company’s transformation and decided to hand over the management to professionals. This was a rare initiative amongst family-owned businesses in Pakistan and a testament to the ZIL Chairperson’s visionary leadership. She said on the occasion:

The flagship brand of the company is Capri Soap. It is the only local premium soap brand in Pakistan to compete with multinational brands in the beauty soap category. This speaks volumes for the Company’s focus on quality control and consumer understanding. Since its launch, Capri has fulfilled its brand promise of rich creamy lather for softer skin.
The brand delivers on parameters of freshness, cleanliness and glowing skin that consumers demand. The unique formula contains the finest ingredients sourced internationally, including essential cleansers, gentle skin moisturizers and distinctive fragrance, which come from carefully chosen perfumes. Capri’s existing range is enriched with natural skin care ingredients. It offers consumers a wide choice based on personal preferences of colour, fragrance and size. The beauty soap offers consumers the choice of Aloe nurture extracts, Strawberry softeners, Nourishing Peach, Purifying green tea, Vitalizing water and Velvet Orchid.
Capri has strengthened its connection with the audience through digital platforms. Capri’s digital communication has not enabled the brand to communicate directly with women for their insights and feedback but Capri’s digital campaigns are also helping uplift the natural beauty and confidence of young Pakistani women through relevant content. During Covid, Capri with the help of its digital platforms, has responsibly played its role in promoting awareness about the cleanliness and hygiene. The brand also reached out to Healthcare staff in selected hospitals across Pakistan to appreciate them for their contributions on the front line with appreciation messages from Pakistani women.
In the popular soap segment, ZIL offers Opal and Lily beauty soaps, while a range of Capri hand-wash products are also available.
Over the decades, ZIL Limited has expanded its product lineup and distribution network.
The Company’s core values are Sustainability, Customer Centricity, Innovation, Learning and Empowerment. The Company completed 50 years of its operations in 2019. This was driven by topline growth of 27% with the highest ever turnover of Rs. 3.2bn and highest ever Profit After Tax (PAT) at PKR 65.7m, which translated into the highest ever earning per share for shareholders.
The Company was also one of the top 25 companies to win the PSX Top 25 Companies Award in 2020.
“The award by the PSX strengthened my belief that when the vision is clear and the intent is pure, then consistency of effort is always rewarded,” says Mr. Mubashir Hasan Ansari, the current CEO of Zulfeqar Industries Ltd.
ZIL’s well-developed distribution system ensures its availability all across Pakistan, in both urban and rural areas. International and Local Modern Trade Outlets in Metros to the Kiryana stores in small villages Capri has earned its shelf space and has held on it firmly. Capri has maintained prominent shelf displays and in shop visibility not only within the category but also with specially designed out of category display units that have further strengthened the in-store product displays and brand presence in the market. It has seen competitors whither, while solidifying its foothold in the personal care products market in the last 52 years.
Until 2020, despite the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic, ZIL had continued to achieve its targets.The successful and safe performance was due to agile planning and cohesive team work. The recurring theme was based on realigning operations by working from home, adhering to strict SOPs by the teams and focusing on giving consumers access to quality products for personal cleanliness and safety.
ZIL ensures that consumers are rewarded for their loyalty with every purchase. This philosophy is the guiding light encouraging every team member to continuously reach out and engage consumers, monitor market dynamics and changing lifestyle habits, enrich knowledge of category growth and utilize expertise to pour it back into the brand experience that encourages consumers across Pakistan to trust the company.
At the same time, ZIL Limited upholds its responsibilities as a responsible corporate citizen by supporting communities, government and non-government relief agencies and people who were on the frontlines of the pandemic. ZIL played its part by donating its product range across the country.
To be included in the Top 25 Companies by the PSX was a further testimony to the stringent standards of operational excellence that ZIL has continued to deliver. The award recognized, amongst other aspects, capital efficiency, dividend distribution, top-line growth, growth in margins and compliance with corporate governance regulations.
It also reaffirmed the Company’s commitment to remain a responsible commercial entity that focuses on providing quality products in keeping with consumers’ personal care needs, while ensuring adherence to the highest standards of compliance.
The pandemic had an immense impact on consumer habits, preferences and consumption trends. Avenues for antibacterial soaps witnessed heavy traffic flows. The demand for hygiene-based germ killing solutions was the silver lining which was tapped through introduction of HYPro, an antibacterial bar soap which provides complete cleanliness with added germ protection. The offering is mild on the skin and provides extra care to the skin, leaving it beautifully scented. HYPro has been introduced in a range of variants offering 100% protection against germs with fresh and energetic fragrances. It also includes price off promotional bundles to suit the affordability needs of the consumers
While the pandemic increased consumer demand for germ protection, the need for frequent and repetitive hand washing resulted in increased consumer demand for hand-wash products as the format offered improved hygiene benefits than bar soaps.
