Abdul Qayyum, Country Manager – Roche Diagnostics Pakistan & Afghanistan, shares his insights about the value of diagnostics in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

August 2021

TThe pressures on healthcare systems have increased exponentially in recent years with aging populations and financial constraints, coupled with the increased burden of chronic illness and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before COVID-19 hit us, diagnostics as a sector was still very much unknown to the general public. This pandemic, however, has pulled diagnostics from the background and thrust it under the global spotlight, creating greater recognition about the value that it brings to the healthcare system.

I am incredibly proud that Roche Diagnostics has been at the very forefront in the fight against this global healthcare crisis right from the word go. We have been very agile and responsive in developing, and bringing to the market new and innovative diagnostics solutions to combat the pandemic at a global level and in Pakistan. However, it is also pertinent to mention here that the need for diagnostics goes far beyond COVID-19. Reliable and timely diagnostics testing not only has an enormous impact on patients, but also on the society as a whole.

Advanced testing gives increasingly precise information that helps save lives, prevent or control the spread of a disease, and monitor treatment effectiveness. Despite its significant contribution across the healthcare continuum, it is rather unfortunate that the true potential and value of diagnostics is often overlooked and undervalued when the healthcare budgets are finalized. Did you know? Diagnostics represents just 2% of all healthcare spending, but influences up to 70% of medical decision-making!

COVID-19 has undoubtedly played a critical role in initiating conversations around diagnostics and now that we are front and center of various healthcare discussions, it is time to emphasize the value of diagnostics beyond COVID. As the backbone of healthcare, diagnostics is no longer just a stepping-stone to treatment. It empowers doctors to make the right decisions for their patients; it gives patients control over their health and wellbeing; and it gives payers and policymakers the confidence that they are investing in the right solutions for patients and the future of healthcare.

As a global leader, at Roche Diagnostics, we feel a sense of responsibility to convey the value of diagnostics to our customers and stakeholders. By working closely with partners, including regulatory authorities, scientific and medical communities to establish standards of practice and guidelines, we are proudly improving clinical practice and shaping new paradigms for patient care.
