Daghaabaaz Dil

Glorifying Cousin Marriage

By Beenish Mahmood | May 2024

Daghabaaz Dil, released in 2024, is a comedy and romance film directed by Wajahat Rauf. It has received a rating of 5.6/10 on IMDb.

The plot is simple. The lead actors are Faris (Ali Rehman) and Zoya (Mahwish Hyatt). Dado is the binding factor between family members. She wishes Zoya and Faros would tie the knot. She wishes to end the long enmity between brothers by uniting the offspring in a nuptial knot. An interesting twist in the film comes in the form of Moon, who is a jinn. Moon falls in love with Zoya and will do anything to obtain her. The destruction he creates ruins relationships such as friendship and love. The entwinement of the supernatural with the mundane gives the film a unique turn.

An interesting point in the film is when a marriage proposal comes for Zoya. Moon interferes, and Zoya coerces the truth from the potential suitor. Zoya’s parents become helpless after seeing her horrific behaviour, and they take her to a peer. The setting of the film shifts between Lahore and Karachi. The cinematography is fantastic, and the music and dance performances captivate the audience.

What surprises one is how the director is in favour of cousin marriages, something that science discourages in today’s world because of the complications in future generations. It is noticeable how the films set so much in behind times.

Women’s empowerment is also a theme in the film. Zoya is a modern girl who tests Faris’s love for her. She is not like a beauty without brains. She makes sure she tests Faris from all angles before agreeing to his proposal. When, because of a misunderstanding, Zoya is hurt and throws a tirade at Faris and calls off the wedding, she makes up for her fault when she doesn’t say but acts on her words, and the audience is relieved.

An emotional scene is when Dado dies. Not only does it bring tears to the eye, but it also unites the siblings. The family is reunited with Dado’s death as they realize that their bickering was the cause of Dado’s death.

The film may not have a strong storyline, but its character delivery is remarkable. Ali Lehman and Mahwish Hyatt’s good looks and glamorous costumes are praiseworthy.

The film’s release on Eid-ul-Fitr was a major factor in deciding its fate. It is lighthearted entertainment replete with dance, miscues, and glittery costumes.

The film is an eclectic mix of emotions of grief, happiness, love, hate, greed, and jealousy.
