Laapata

Antidote for Stress

Keeping its tradition of bringing entertaining content our way, Hum TV has launched another exciting TV serial ‘Laapata’ written and directed by Khizer Idress under Momina Duraid Productions. With Ayeza Khan, Sarah Khan, Ali Rehman and Goher Rasheed in the lead, ‘Laapata’ seems like a light hearted TV serial with a youth-oriented storyline. It is quite different from the usual run-of-the-mill stories where family politics, plotting and planning makes the major part of the story. The story has out-of-the-box characters who resonate with the youth. Each cast member is unique and powerful as they portray characters they haven’t played before.

The story of ‘Laapata’ revolves around Geeti (Ayeza Khan), Falak (Sarah Khan) and Shams (Ali Rehman) who are cousins. Since their parents are close, they all live in the same house.

Geeti seems heavily inspired by Kareena Kapoor’s character of Geet from the Indian film ‘Jab We Met’ but while Kareena portrays a positive character, Geeti is neither a protagonist nor antagonist. She is a TikTok star who knows well how to use her social media power. The way she threatens the poor shopkeeper with allegations of harassment is mean. Hence, she gets the grocery for free.

Though Geeti is not that popular, she still has an attitude and one can witness that in her body language. She takes pride in her beauty and boldness but her arrogance soon backfires when the guy she was about to elope with ditches her. Since Geeti is selfish, cunning and knows her way around, she eyes her cousin Shams now as she believes in keeping men handy.

Shams and Falak, on the other hand, are in love with each other and nobody is aware of it. Shams is greedy who always thinks about ways of taking shortcuts to earn money. He handles a general kiryana store with his father and often steals his father’s money and spends it on gambling. Having connections with a few goons of the neighbourhood, Shams gets involved in beating people for money. Falak, however, portrays a positive character who plays badminton. She is a headstrong educated girl who aims to attempt the CSS exams, just like her father did.

One evening, Geeti catches Falak and Shams romancing and starts threatening them that she will reveal their secret to the family. When Falak asks her not to, she demands mobile charges and gifts in return and Shams fulfils her wishes to keep her mouth shut.

Things take an unexpected turn when Geeti plans to win Shams despite knowing about Shams and Falak relationship. With Geeti’s growing obsession for Shams, Falak tells all about their relationship and their desire to get married, leaving Geeti in a state of shock. Falak even threatens Geeti to stay away from Shams or else she might hurt her. Unfortunately, Falak’s parents reject Shams as they think that they both are not a match.

Shams and his family take the rejection as an insult and to make lots of money in little time, Shams contacts his boss Hakim sahab to gamble in an elite party where he could win up to 25 lakhs. Like his previous attempts, this too backfires and he loses. The dealer then asks for his money and also threatens him that if he won’t pay, he might be framed into some other case. That’s when Shams goes into hiding. Soon the family starts worrying about his whereabouts but little do they know that the police has arrested him on charges of terrorism, on the instructions of the dealer.

The serial takes a two-year lapse. Geeti is now a sensible and responsible girl. She has learned from her mistakes and even feels sorry for the shopkeeper with whom she misbehaved. She is also friendlier with Falak. While the years have changed Geeti for good, Shams is a missing (Laapata) person now as the family still does not know of him.

Enters Daniyal (Gohar Rasheed) who is Falak’s new boss. Though it clearly shows that he is interested in Falak, she pays no heed to him as she is still lost in Shams’ dreams. What will happen when Geeti sees Daniyal? Will she return to what she used to be?

Laapata depicts the true picture of the modern generation where people are crazy about social media. Geeti is not a character people would love watching as the character truly shows how people use their popularity negatively. The shopkeeper scene didn’t go well with many as even celebrities took to social media and condemned such scenes, considering the increasing number of harassment and rape issues perpetuating in the country.

Though Khizer Idrees has done wonders in direction and writing, much was expected from Ayeza Khan after her portrayal of the cute and lively Meenu in ‘Chupke Chupke’. Sarah Khan plays Falak to perfection and Abdul Rehman as Shams shows versatility in his acting.

Viewers like the show for its unique storyline. However, time will tell what the future holds for Geeti, Falak, Shams and Daniyal.
