Wonder Boy is Coming!

Just like in the past, there is, once again, a rumour in the town that the regime change in the capital is about to happen, possibly after the end of Holy Ramzan. As they say, a wonder boy is coming with a bang to replace the old faces who have yet again turned out to be consummate failures when it comes to good governance and economic uplift. Almost in every era, this question has been significant, whether the government has failed to deliver or is not being allowed to do so. As before, this question has gained momentum again. Some people are referring to changing the Prime Minister, while some pundits foresee a sea change in the entire governance system. Connecting the dots, political pundits are making predictions, while others are making explanations and justifications by making plus-minus formulas. If the nation’s memory serves it right, it has already seen the rise and fall of many a playboy and wonder boy before. If any of these boys turn out to be the wonder boy everyone is talking about, what else do we need to call the beloved country a wonderland, where every unforeseeable thing can happen for better or worse? Anyhow, just fasten your seatbelts, as the ‘Wonder Boy’ is coming!

Double Standards

Spending extravagantly on marriage functions could be the norm for the filthy rich, but a sense of humanity must always prevail among the public representatives. However, the recent wedding of Junaid Safdar, son of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, turned out to be just another unapologetic parade of excess, characterised by glittering jewelry, custom-stitched bridal wear, and the most expensive finery beyond the wildest imaginations of the people of the country, where almost half of its population is reeling below the poverty line. Though the Chief Minister stole the show all alone, the ceremony was not merely a private indulgence for the obscenely wealthy, as such a flagrant fanfare was exhibited by those who masquerade as servants of the people and sermonize them about austerity measures, patience, and sacrifice. What message does such a shameless display send to those who have been literally crushed under hyperinflation, unbearable taxes, rising unemployment, and ever-ending despair? When millions struggle to afford a single decent meal every day, the recent pageantry was reduced to a public insult, as well as a loud declaration of how distant power has grown from the people it claims to represent.
