A Mindful Sunday

By ZARMEEN SYED | March 2021

Nowadays, we are so technology-oriented that we do not realize that we often skip out on the little moments of the day that are worth experiencing. Something like this happened to me last Sunday, when I attended an Indie Festival. The most amazing part of this festival was its small gathering on a rooftop where the air just kept making me realize how important it is to have a breather!

As I was roaming around, I bumped into this small setup by a woman called Bushra Mehmood. She told me about how she left her job and devoted herself to raising self-awareness and mindfulness among people who lack it the most. As we continued talking, she asked me to take her session to understand what it means and how distracted we are these days. I sat on her mini chair and let her take the course of the journey. It started by closing my eyes and her words started flowing in my ears. She told me to relax, not caring that the world is watching and start with taking deep breaths. Then she asked me to think about the last happy moment I had lived and to picture myself being in that moment all over again, with what I was wearing, what I was doing. She further spoke like a voice inside me making me become one with myself as I synced my breathing with my thoughts and imagined the colours that popped up in my mind while I relived those moments.

Moments later, when I had relaxed like a baby without a care in the world, I opened the palm of my hands and with that I was guided to open my eyes slowly. I saw a colouring book in front of me. Bushra asked me to pick a picture like a small child and colour it. Yes, you heard me right, colour it! Something I hadn't done in a while! As I started doing it, I was worried about making it look pretty but then she told me that I didn’t need to make it pretty, I just needed to fill it with colours of my happiness. With every stroke I realized the amount of concentration that was required and I, being a distracted person, had myself drifting away to my own thought bubbles. As I started looking around, Bushra came by and guided that whenever I found myself falling away from what I was supposed to do, I needed to stop right there, take deep breaths and start again.

This whole experience had me relaxed as if there were years of pent-up distraction, stress that I had been saving up, deciding and saying to myself over and over again that one day, I will just chill and relax. Although, I learned all these amazing things from her but what really stuck in my mind were these words she said to me, ‘It's OK, if you get tired from what you do, just take a break. You deserve it. Don`t be too hard on yourself. Just start over again with it.’
