TCS pioneers regional trade, launches first TIR pilot to Central Asia from Pakistan

Yonus Ali Siddiqui, (TCS), Aslam Ebrahim, (BOML), Ahmed Zafar, (TCS), Muneeza Kassim, (TCS), Usman Afridi, (TCS), Tanveer Abbasi, (TCS), Tanveer Alam, (TCS), Harris Jamali, (TCS),
Ahmed Raza Khan, DG, (Transit Trade Pakistan Customs), Qasim Awan, (TCS),Valy Tariq Rangoonwala, (BOML), Salim Ghani, (PNC-ICC), Javaid Basini, (PNC-ICC) and Rana Asif, (PNC-ICC).
For the first time in Pakistan’s history, a TCS truck carrying a commercial consignment, travelled from Pakistan to Uzbekistan via Afghanistan. This landmark achievement was led by TCS in collaboration with the Governments of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Pakistan Regional Economic Integration Activity (PREIA). On its return journey, it took the same route to deliver goods in Karachi.
Commenting on this historic milestone, Khalid Awan, Chairman TCS, said, “In today’s world, trade moves through borders under a global system. Pakistan has entered that system now and TCS is the first Pakistani company to do so.
“Regional trade is very important for our region. We have very strong ties with countries to our north, such as China and Central Asian Republics. Pakistan has enjoyed a traditional trade relationship with them and it has a very strong future potential,” he added.
The Pakistan Regional Economic Integration Activity (PREIA) provided technical and financial support for the pilot project involving TCS. The pilot shipment was the first in a series of five planned trial runs between Pakistan and Central Asia.
These shipments will test the viability of various routes for international transit to Central Asia and beyond under the TIR Convention. They will document the associated operational and logistical challenges on this route.
This was the first successful international trucking pilot project. Most Regional countries including Afghanistan are now members of this global trade system. TCS is the first and so far the only TIR accredited operator in Pakistan.
The shipment was also compliant with the United Nations’ ‘Transports Internationaux Routiers’ (TIR) Convention, an international customs transit system that facilitates trade by expediting border checks between countries. Pakistan entered the TIR Convention in 2016 and was declared as a ‘TIR Operational Country’ by the IRU (International Road Transport Union) in April 2018.
Pakistan entered the T.I.R. Customs Clearance System, which is administered globally by International Road Transport Union (IRU) and in Pakistan by the Pakistan National Commission of International Chambers of Commerce (PNC- ICC). Countries are admitted to the system by signing a multi-lateral treaty. Pakistan was admitted to the system as 69th member state in 2016. Today 77 countries are part of this global trade system.![]()
